This past Saturday, we visited the farm to do some work. I did a little winter sowing of white yarrow and shungiku. I ordered these from a site called freeheirloomseeds.org. I also ordered the wildflower seeds I planted a few weeks ago from a small Etsy shop called Bloom and Haul. I like to support small business when possible. These were both reasonably priced but will have to wait until spring to see if the seeds germinate. It has been a warm winter so far this year in Oklahoma and I hope they can grow well. As I was looking for onions on Saturday, I saw a sweet potato sticking out of the ground. There are 3 onions still growing but the bulbs are small so I replanted them. When I pulled the sweet potato up, I found many more. Most of them were huge. I have never seen sweet potatoes of this size in the grocery store. I found 28 sweet potatoes total. This was a surprise and a lot for 2 people to eat. Will have to cook and freeze some for later. We found about six small regular potatoes as well. I guess the sweet potatoes took over the space from the onions and potatoes. Maybe I should separate them next time. We are still working on eating the pumpkins from a month ago. My boyfriend worked on building some terraced hills for planting herbs and flowers on next year. We want to focus mostly on establishing shrubs, trees, and perennials next year. We will cut back on vegetables since they need more water and attention. We can have a more successful vegetable garden once we move there full time. We will still likely have a few vegetables growing next year, just not as many as I attempted this first year. Due to the seed exchange I joined, I may have more to plant than I expect. The seeds should be arriving in the mail soon. It will be good to have some diversity instead of a 160 tree persimmon orchard. I cooked kung Pao chicken this week from the brand Asian Home Gourmet. The flavor was average and the price was inexpensive. I have wrapped up my family holiday gifts for the year. My family got sick unexpectedly so I cannot visit them this year. I will likely go to the land again tomorrow to work more and hang out with my kitty 🐈.
